Month-Long Cleanse and a Healthier Me Part 2

Jumpstarting Your Well-being, Where to Starting Somewhere

New daily habits lead to the lifestyle changes we envision for our health and happiness. A habit heals old patterns that keep you stuck in the same cycle, going round and round without change.  In creating a new meaningful, sustainable pattern of habit the work needs to be repeated again and again till it replaces old thought forms and feelings. In order to achieve your goal to greater health break the recycled wheel.

Thoughts turn into ideas, ideas turn into goals, goals form a plan but it is the actions that bring your goals into being.

 Achieving Your Goals

Plan of Action

Dreaming about what you want in life is the first step to making dreams a reality. However the larger picture of your dream can be overwhelming till you break it down into smaller attainable steps.

I am a great believer in visualizing what, where and how you are going to make your dreams come true. For me, that comes with my daily meditation. I not only envision my dream as reality I feel it as already here.

Meditation is a lengthy subject, so for now just sit with your ideas and let them play in your mind’s eye till they form a clear picture.

My starting spot for a healthier me came in seeing myself exercising with a thinner, happier, healthier, me emerging. I hold that in my heart feeling like I had already achieved it.

Voicing your new habit and/or belief helps your mind reprogram the old stale beliefs and strengthens your resolve to achieving your goals. My smart phone has become a way to write, view and repeat my affirmations daily. Each affirmation is set with an alarm to go off during the day to encourage me with positive messages. I follow that up with post it notes on my mirror, refrigerator and by my desk.

“I am grateful and blessed to have a strong, healthy body.”

                                                Mirror Affirmation

Plan of Action

With every goal you need an action step that tells the universe that you are serious. Small steps help you climb the hill, large steps lead to the mountaintop. However if you are in need of a jumpstart I recommend the small steps for several hills make a mountain.

Every morning, I dress in my exercise clothes; I get on my exercise bike and play something in the background that motivates me to move.

Jon, a friend, personal trainer, coach, and former gym owner, fell on hard times. He said this about getting back into optimal shape, “I knew that the way back for me was to start working out daily, again. I believed I could and would feel better about myself if I did. It didn’t matter that I could hardly put one foot in front of the other what matter was getting back into the habit of walking. I started out slow doing interval training; walk slowly, then walk as fast as I could then slow again.”

Jon is back into the role he was born to do, coaching others to be physical fit with a positive self-image. He would say that his recovery is a well-worn path to healing his body, mind and spirit.

I took a lesson from Jon’s playbook; my plan was to exercise on my bike with interval training as least 5 days a week. Afterwards I would hold yoga poses to stretch out my muscles. My workout time: 45 min.

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!”

by Benjamin Franklin

Your word may be golden and your heart may be true but how do you know that you have followed through?

Keeping a calendar on the wall next to my exercise bike to record my progress in the form of time exercised, miles cycled and calories burned is like having my own cheerleader saying “Way to go!”

It can also work in the other direction. “I see you missed a day or two, did you have an alternative exercise? Do you need to recommit?”

If you are shy about posting your progress where all can see then keep it private, the important thing is to keep a log.

Life needs to be celebrated! What gives you joy? Is it in the beginning of the journey, the middle or the end? How do you reward yourself for a task, job or goal achieved?

A cleanse, is all about food, what you eat and what you don’t eat. It’s all about how you feel when you release toxins that have been stored in the body. It’s about giving you permission to take care of yourself.

I started to think about the end of the month long cleanse. Would I go back to my old eating habits or would I incorporate what I had learned into my lifestyle? Working on this question I knew that food, as much as I enjoyed it, was not the reward for a completing the month long cleanse or for losing weight.

I asked another question: What can I do for me that will make me feel good about me?

Losing weight is all about self-image, how do I look now? For me summer was about wearing shorts and showing off my legs. I promised myself that if I reached my set goal of weight loss I would get my legs waxed in celebration.

In December, I put my exercise plan in motion and it appeared to be working, at least as far as my clothes were a measuring stick. However the real test was going to be my upcoming appointment with my Naturopatic Physician in April.

Since the natural disaster happened where I found myself in rebuild mode to survive the one aspect of my life that I did not want to face weight creeping up on my form and setting in. I always faced away from the scale at the doctor’s office. In April, I needed to confront my greatest fears of not losing weight and what was I going to do to change that.

I faced the scale and stepped on, it confirmed what I already had known, no weight loses.

Instead of being devastated I was ready to put my plan of a Spring Cleanse in motion.

Month-Long Cleanse and a Healthier Me part 1

There comes a time when we just have to work from the inside out to release old beliefs that form base patterns in the way we think and habits we keep.

A Spring cleanse is a great way to jumpstart your body on the path of a healthier you by letting go of toxins that have been building up in your bodies organs. Winter, is the time of hibernation and contemplation. Spring is a time of new growth, new insights and stretching yourself with no limits. Summer is a time to bask in the warm of the earth and exploring the abundance that surrounds you. Fall is harvest time, reflecting on all you learned and going inward as the earth slows its growth.

Benefits of a Cleanse

  • Addressing external and environmental factors
  • Uncovering internal emotional triggers, including stress
  • Improving lifestyle, including diet and exercise routines

Patterns of belief start in early childhood playing over and over in adulthood until you look at them and release what no longer serves you. A cleanse, whether it’s in Spring or Fall, is a time for deep contemplation of these deep seeded patterns. A cleanse will help reclaim more of your core essences, reclaim vital energy and lessen the load of mental clutter.

In my spiritual work, I work in harmony with the mind, body, spirit connection. Because of that I am aware of my own words, thoughts and feeling in any given situation. If I have a negative reaction to a person or place I reflect on the why. Once a pattern is identified, I can see whether it is attached to an old learned belief pattern. The key to self-healing is to form a new positive belief. More importantly practicing the new positive belief during a negative situation will bring about long lasting change.

“A single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.”

Henry David Thoreau

What my own experience has taught me.

In 2011, I experienced a natural disaster to my family’s business and spent seven years rebuilding the interior of business. During that time I moved 3 hours away and found myself in the car traveling back and forth with very little exercise and not the freshest of foods.

Emotionally I packed on a good 25 pounds of fat to survive. A year after selling the business and getting back to my own business endeavors and interest I wanted and needed to drop the excess weight. My overall heath was in jeopardy if I continued down this path.

I believe in the body’s ability to heal its self. I also believe that you need to take action steps both mental, emotional, spiritually to go along with the physical healing. I knew that since the natural disaster, I was carrying the abundant well-being of family members who relied on the business prospering. I also knew that it was time to find someone who would take over the business and love it as the family has since its inception.

You have the power to identify, eradicate, change and/ or reverse belief.

Winged Hearts Beat of Love

“Life is a thread through which ever silent voices speak volumes as we connect our beating hearts as one.”

By Lesley Nase

Winged hearts 1

Nicole Danielle, artist and college friend of my daughters sent out a call of hearts, no bigger than your hand, stuffed like a pillow and words either inside or out. In college, Nicole had been part of Healing Hearts Art Project after 9/11, the project created in her peace and love and she always wanted to create more Healing Heart Art Projects in different parts of the country.

Then came the shooting of 17 students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, her alma mater, it was time for Healing Heart Art Project 2.

At times, my mind works overtime to create and what could be more inspirational than healing hearts. As I slept, dream makers floated a single beating heart, so big it was all that I could see at first. The heart’s steady beat matched my own, it drew back and as it did I saw it had wings. With the blink of my eye it drew back even more into the heavens. Then I saw 17 beating hearts with wings, all connected by a thread of life. Without a doubt I was making 17 winged hearts for the Healing Heart Art Project.

The next morning, the writer in me kept playing with word from dream: hearts, beating, thread, connected, etc. I began to put the words on paper when I heard this sentence:

Life is a thread through which ever silent voices speak volumes as we connect our beating hearts as one.

Winged hearts 2

My wish for you is that you follow your heart and reach out to connect to others in a way that feels right to you. Your love, compassion and healing is needed in this world.

President Day Wonderment

#WonderQuestions,  Did you ever wonder why something is the way it is.

Today, is #PresidentsDay, why is February the month set aside to honor Presidents? Simple, George Washington was born in this month, along with Abraham Lincoln. Two well respected early presidents.

How did the holiday end up being the third Monday in February if Washington’s day of birth is the 22nd and Lincoln is the 12th?  In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill, we refer to this as a 3 day holiday weekend.

Now that I answered those wonderments did you ever wonder, “How many presidents were actually born in February?” Answer 4, besides the above, Harrison, W. and Reagan.

“Which month has the most presidents’ births?” October with 6 presidents: Adams, J., Roosevelt, T., Hayes, Arthur, Eisenhower and Carter. You didn’t ask but September is the only month that has one out of 45 presidents with a birth in it, Taft.

To view this #PresidentsDay from a different perspective I wondered this question:   “What Astrological Sign has most often been President?”  It’s a tie between Scorpio and Aquarius.

What has you wondering?

Happy #NationalBobbleHeadDay

As I get ready for my debit picture book #WhoPaintsTheWorld to be published, I set a goal to post on my blog every day. To prime the writing pump I decided to take a look at the National Day Calendar 2018.

I missed #NationalHangoverDay, #NationalScienceFictionDay, #NationalChocolateCoveredCherryDay, #NationalTiviaDay and #NationalBirdDay, which doesn’t even cover the other National Days that are celebrated on the same day as the aforementioned.

January 6, 2018 in #NationalCuddleUpDay, very fitting for a day with below zero temperatures and wind chill factors that make it 20-30 degrees colder.

Fact: Cuddling up with someone, human or animal, releases oxytocin. Oxytocin is a powerful hormone that acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain.

Oxytocin is known as the “Love hormone”, the “Trust hormone” and the “Cuddle Hormone”, in other words it just makes us feel better and more receptive to others.

  • 5 Reasons to Hug and Cuddle Today
  1. Giving or receiving a hug works as an antidepressant. #Hugging just makes someone feel good, in the dark days of January we could all use a little #Cuddle.
  2. #Cuddling makes you a better parent, not only do your feelings of love increase with cuddles so does trust between parent and child.
  3. Scientist say that oxytocin has been shown to reduce glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. Which in lay terms means, those who are looking to lose weight in January are great candidates for more #cuddle time!
  4. #Hugging in a social situation has leads to trust. Many people have social anxiety, when greeted with a hug it helps to breakdown the social barriers. Let’s build feelings of optimism and self-esteem in our fellow person.
  5. #Hugging is healing. Studies show that oxytocin relieves pain. Kiss a child’s boo boo, hug a partner who has a headache and comfort one who hasn’t long to live.

The best reason to #hug and #cuddle someone you know in your life on #NationalCuddleDay ! It just feels good to connect in such a personal way to another living being. #Hug a friend, #hug a partner, #hug a child or #hug a pug.

Just a quick shout out to those who are celebrating #NationalBeanDay, my soup is simmering.

It’s All About the Weather

It’s all about the weather or whether. We make daily decisions based on whether the weather is calling for a clear skies or storm warnings.

Our lives are a bit like that as well, in January we set our resolutions to do and be more than we were in the previous year. Skies are clear so it’s smooth sailing until we share with others hoping for positive response to spur us on to greatness in achieving our years goals.

All too often our goals are crushed when what we view as a worthwhile pursuit is dampened by the words of others. Soon the storm clouds gather as we think “Who are they to rain on my parade!”

Doubt settles in, feelings of not being good enough take over. Then the question becomes whether or not to continue on the path you have chosen in a hail storm. Or bail out on your goals in lieu of seeking bright sun filled lazy days.

My advice stick to the storm filled days of agony. Resolutions and goal whether they are personal, business or health all have moments of despair.

 winter footpath

“A single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.”         Henry David Thoreau

Hibernate, incubate and create your goals step by step. Close ranks when the weather sends howling winds with whiteout snow storms. Hunker down, dig deeper, and find the resolve to stand fast. Create your world again and again, till one day you look to find beauty in your convictions and the sun upon your face.

It’s all about whether we choose to Believe in ourselves or are swayed by others.

#Believe in Your Convictions

candy cane paper

Holiday Funny

Mother to 5 year old daughter: “Would you like to wrap your friend’s birthday gift?”

5 year old: “I don’t know where the paper is?”

Mother: “It’s right where it always is, in my bedroom.”

Mother and daughter disappear into the bedroom. Mother returns to continue the conversation with Granmere. After several minutes the 5 year runs into the room.

5 year old: “I wrapped the present in the Candy Cane Paper!

Mother: “That’s Christmas paper!  Let’s think about this, would you like your birthday gift wrapped in Christmas paper?”

5 year old: “No, my birthday is in October.”

Mother: “Then let’s wrap your friends gift in birthday paper.”

5 year old: “I like the Candy Cane Paper!

Mother looks to her mother for help then back to the child.

Mother: “Your Granmere, has a birthday close to Christmas. Ask her if she would like her birthday gift wrapped in Christmas paper?”

Five year old turns to look at Granmere. Granmere patiently explains that her birthday is her birthday and Christmas is Christmas. Child has a look of not quite understanding where this is going.

Granmere: “When someone gives me a gift with birthday paper I know it’s for my birthday. When I get a present with Christmas paper I know it’s a Christmas present.”

Big smile on 5 year old: “I still like the Candy Cane Paper!”

At that she leaves the room.

Stick to your inner convictions, it’s not about the outer wrappings it’s about the inner #Belief.

The Magical Year of Success

Think BIG 102017

If you knew you couldn’t fail what would you do to succeed to achieve your life’s goals and dreams? Given six months, no more than, a year, would you change your believes to change your mindset to accomplish your desires for success?

“Belief works this way. Belief, the “I am-positive-I-can” attitude, generates the power, skill and energy needed to do. When you believe I-can-do-it, the how–to-do-it develops.”

By David J. Schwartz, PH.D “The Magic of Thinking BIG”

It is often not enough to believe that you can move a mountain and change your life you need to act on moving that preverbal mountain. I decided to explore David Schwartz’s widely read book “The Magic of Thinking BIG”, with a subtitle “Acquire The Secrets of Success…  Achieve Everything You’ve Always Wanted”.

This book and others encourage me to go BIG when it came time to sell my families campground. For a good part of my adult life I ran Camping on the Battenkill. February of 2017 I sold the business, in one year. In my heart and mind, I knew that the time was right. I made changes in the campground, the family home and in my way of thinking that lead to the sale.

Selling the family business left a void in my life. I no longer had a job or a driving goal. What I did have was a new home and a desire to make my dreams a reality. How would I pursue those goals? One of my goals is the essential desire for financial freedom?

In 2011, tropical storm Irene came to visit the campground, flooding three-fourths of the park. My memory of the flood waters swelling to overflowing then pounding down the berm protecting the campground is vivid. I stood on at the top of the roadway leading into the campground when the flood waters came rushing toward me. The waters veered to the left as it coursed through the woods leaving me opened mouth at the sight.

At that moment, I felt as if I stood on the precipice of change, like the Fool in a deck of Tarot cards. One foot firmly planted on the Earth with the other suspended in air hovering over nothing, moving forward into an uncertain future.

As I gaped at the river where the six foot berm had disappeared, I thought:

“A new vision for my life is now clear.

When my father died in 1994, I took over the management of my families established successful business. I do not regret those years for I learned much. I had the time to expand on my writing and to study Shamanism. I did not however have the freedom to act more fully on my dreams and goals. The family business always called me back to take care of one aspect or another.

Wishing will not change the past and the past in not where I live. I am looking only to the future. A future where I build my own business(s) on a strong foundation that will yield passive income. This passive income will be the bases for supporting my dreams; my dream of writing, of travel and most of all the opportunity to touch and assist others in their dreams.

This is the year to explore the Power of Belief.

It occurs to me that I need a plan of action. When I got ready to sell the campground I read all kinds of business books. One of my favorites was “The Magic of Thinking BIG”. What might happen if I put the wisdom of this book into a year of practice?

Schwartz proclaims in his book:

“In every chapter of this book you will find dozens of hardheaded, practical ideas, techniques, and principles that will enable you to harness the tremendous power of thinking big, so as to gain for yourself the success, happiness, and satisfaction you want so much.”

Making a plan of action to implement the power of belief based on David Schwartz book I trust will lead to change. I also trust that that change can come in ways that I have not even considered yet. For as you change your daily thoughts you will bring to you people and opportunities to achieve your goals, like attracts like.

The Law of Attractions states simply the ability to attract into our lives that which we are focusing on. Whatever can be imagined and held in the mind’s eye is achievable if you take action on a plan you will get to where you want to be.

This is a yearlong journey of “The Magic of Thinking BIG”. Or as I sometimes think of it “The Magical Year of Success”.

I hope that you will join me as I explore and discover what this year will bring. I would love to hear from readers on how the #PowerofBelief has changed your life.

A Wreak, A Save, An a Insight

left hand curve road signWalking alone in the suburbs or walking alone in the woods the feeling of being watched or watched over is common to many. The theme of my children’s picture book, Who Paints the World is one of you are not alone. The tale tells of an angel watching over a small child as she views her uncertain world from her bedroom. Hope asks the question “Who paint the world?” An angel replies, “Why a child, that’s who.” Continue reading
